Pluto by Naoki Urusawa - Fantastic adaptation of an old Tezuka story (which you do not need to have read to appreciate) featuring mysterious murders and artificial intelligences. Book wraps with a posthumously-discovered draft for a final chapter, which actually wraps up everything in a fitting manner. Incomplete because Kon's directorial career took off (and then his untimely death). Opus by Satoshi Kon - Metafictional and toys with the dissolution of fourth walls. Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind by Hayao Miyazaki - Epic far-off post-acalyptic adventure by Hayao Miyazaki that spans political and environmental themes. In Clothes Called Fat by Moyocco Anno - exploration what it's like to be a woman and overweight in what could make a good bookclub companion to Okazaki's Helter Skelter. Helter Skelter by Kyoko Okazaki - Wild story from the '90s about the place of women in Japanese society. (available from Dark Horse - out of print but reasonable price on AMazon) (available from Viz)ĭomu by Katsuhiro Otomo - Telekinetic murders and a cataclysmic showdown between an old man and a little girl. Other readers may prefer Touch or H2 but Corss Game was my personal favourite. Just a lot of fun, even if like me you have no interest in baseball. (available from Viz)Ĭross Game by Mitsuru Adachi - A sweet, mournful, hopeful, lovely, and very funny drama about love, loss, and family. The fifth volume especially can be jaw-dropping. (available from Yen Press)Ĭhildren of the Sea by Daisuke Igarashi - Bizarro cosmic narrative writ to the smallness of all the oceans of the world. ![]() Kaoru Mori is an astonishing artist and so much is poured into every chapter. (available from Kodansha)Ī Bride's Story by Kaoru Mori - A pile of stories exploring marital culture across the late 19th century Caspian region during the Great Game era. ![]() (available from Vertical)Īkira by Katsuhiro Otomo - Everyone knows Akira, right? Like the movie, only good. Fleshes out the three parts of the movie, makes part 3 much more robust, and adds a whole fourth part which gives the story a much better sense of resolution, drawing together many dangling narrative threads. (available from Viz)ĥ Centimeters per Second by Yukiko Seike - Kind of just like the anime, only soooo much better. 20th Century Boys by Naoki Urusawa - Decades-spanning thriller about friends and cults and the end of the world and rock music.
